Reporting Misconduct

The University of Michigan Law School is a diverse community and seeks to create and sustain an environment of inclusivity for all of its students that is free from discrimination and harassment. The University of Michigan Law School’s non-discrimination policy is set forth below:

The University of Michigan Law School, as an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer, complies with all applicable federal and state laws regarding nondiscrimination and affirmative action. The University of Michigan Law School is committed to a policy of equal opportunity for all persons and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ethnicity, age, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, gender expression, disability, religion, height, weight, military status, or veteran status in employment, educational programs and activities, and admissions.

As a condition of using the Office of Career Planning’s facilities or services, employers must observe the principles of equal opportunity and non-discrimination stated in this policy with respect to their own hiring, promotion, retention, and conditions of employment.

Complaints that prospective employers have violated this non-discrimination policy, or have otherwise engaged in illegal, inappropriate, or unethical conduct during the recruiting process will be investigated and, where appropriate, sanctions up to and including exclusion from recruiting activities may be imposed.

Click here for information on how to report complaints to the Law School.

But, what Happens If …

Students have often asked what to do when they experience or witness behavior at a recruiting event that doesn’t rise to the level of misconduct or discrimination, but is nevertheless awkward, uncomfortable, inappropriate, unprofessional, etc.

The answer is straightforward: please come talk to OCP. In addition to answering questions and making sure that students have access to any support resources that may be needed, this kind of information is good for OCP to know and, in some instances when it’s appropriate (and supported by the student), share with the employer (either directly with the individual, or more generally with the recruiting team).  The starting point of the process in every instance is coming and talking with us.
